KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Tension climbs, drawing you in with routine tasks that take on a darker edge.
  • Set in a cold, 90s post-Soviet city environment with VHS-like visuals and atmospheric dread.
  • The game’s strength lies in its juxtaposition between mundane pharmacy tasks (client services) and subtle uncanny nature.
  • Pharma Noctis feels more like an existential horror that makes you apprehensive of your environment.

OPENING

When I first saw the name Pharma Noctis, I expected a typical horror experience like quick thrills, loud noises, and exaggerated scares.

But the demo proved me wrong. This game focuses more on creating an uncanny, eerie atmosphere than sinks under your skin, instead of chasing cheap jump scares.

I was navigating the quiet after hours shift, confronting the discomfort of the unknown that rises slowly, piece by piece.

GAME OVERVIEW

Game Focus: Pharma Noctis is a first-person, routine-driven psychological horror set during a pharmacist’s night shift.

As you assist customers, verify prescriptions, and prepare medications, irregularities start to surface. Some are strange, such as what customers ask for, but others were disquieting.

What makes it stand out? Well, to me, the post-Soviet 90s setting, complete with fluorescent lights and eerie minimalism, creates an atmosphere that’s both nostalgic and uncanny.

Pharma Noctis brings horror to the commonplace, turning simple tasks into moments of second guessing and double take.

DEV NOTES

Pharma Noctis is built in Unreal Engine 5, showing It’s a controlled atmospheric piece. The developer works professionally as a VFX artist, and it shows.

The lighting feels intentional, making the pharmacy come off as sterile. As tasks progress, the restraint in the environment teases with shadows and silence, building on the anxiety.

With VHS simplicity, it adds to that sese of unease that itches in the mind.

Being the dev’s first game, they explained it as,

"I’m handling the design, implementation, and visual direction myself, which is why atmosphere and sound design were especially important in this project."

So, this shows the game as a controlled experiment in mood. And knowing it’s a solo build makes the tension feel more personal.

PSYCHOLOGICAL HOOK

What makes this game disturbing is that dissonance between routine and abnormality, worming its way into your psyche.

The demo gave me the sense that there was something darker going on. This slowly built, as the in-game news and activities/sounds in the pharmacy created a primal fear of the unknown.

WHY IT’S WORTH YOUR TIME

If you’re looking for a game that will creep the most subtle and psychological ways, Pharma Noctis offers a nice experience.

The demo won’t flash at you or jump out with loud scare. It will make you uneasy, wondering what might happen and why.
